I am passionate about learning and passing my knowledge onto my students. I wish to help people become engaged in their own process of self-improvement and discovery. My strengths as a teacher include compassionate listening; honing in on my student's individual needs; and drawing on my music background to help musicians and people in other creative and performing art mediums.
I completed my teacher training in 2009 under the direction of Missy Vineyard Ehrgood from the Alexander Technique School New England in Amherst, MA. I also hold degrees in flute performance from The Hartt School of Music, West Hartford, CT (M.Mus) and Moravian College, Bethlehem, PA (B.Mus).
Alexander Technique: My Story
Beyond Pain Relief: Discovering a Unique and Special Practice
I discovered the Alexander Technique as a music student in 1997 when I was 18 years old. I distinctly remember my first experience with the Alexander Technique. I felt as though all the tension in my body was melting away! The Alexander Technique came to me again as a graduate student at the Hartt School of Music. During that time I was working very hard playing my flute for many hours each day. I began to experience severe pain in my shoulders and neck and numbness throughout my hands and arms. Every time I played my flute, I was in severe pain having to stop early due to the numbness. A fellow flutist told me about an Alexander teacher in town and I began taking lessons. The Alexander Technique teacher taught me that the numbness in my hands was not isolated to the hands - it was linked to the pain I was experiencing in my neck and shoulders. I learned to think of my mind and body as one organism – not separate parts - and that the way I use myself can affect my entire being. The technique made so much sense to me and I was amazed at how much I learned in every lesson.
Becoming a Teacher
I continued taking lessons for 5 years before committing to a teacher training course in 2006. In those 5 years I studied the Alexander Technique privately and took many workshops with Elizabeth Huebner which included work on the art of breathing and an ongoing series on the Alexander Technique for music teachers. I also attended a workshop on the Dart procedures with Marie Stroud.
I trained as an Alexander Technique teacher from 2006-2009 at the Alexander Technique School New England under the direction of Missy Vineyard. My training is certified by AmSAT and meets the highest standards set by the national organization, which consists of 1600 training hours over a minimum of three years. My training to become a teacher of the Alexander Technique has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
I am passionate about learning and passing my knowledge on to others. I am an educator and an artist. I am a performer and a teacher. I learn from my experiences and strive for constant improvement in all areas of my life.
